It is a great accomplishment for any school to receive recognition as a Reward School and we are excited to have five in our district! All the hard work from last year paid off. It was a tough year for everyone involved. Thank you to our staff for working so hard last year, and this year, during the pandemic. We feel confident that students in Gibson County Special School District are in a place where they can get one of the best educations in the state because of our great teachers and staff.
• GCSSD was named an exemplary district, only 1 of 7 in the state.
• GCSSD also had TVAAS level 5 scores. This is the fifth straight year the district has scored level 5 on TVAAS. Since 2012/13 the district has been a level 5 except for one year, 2014/15. (There were no TVAAS scores in 2019/20.)

Gibson County Special School District (GCSSD) is receiving a 5,533,854 million dollar funding allocation through the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) Fund under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021, enacted on March 11, 2021. Funds are designated for one-time or short-term expenditures to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools and address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students.
Our school system’s priority has been and will remain providing safe, in-person learning for all students. In order to develop a plan for the use of ESSER III funds, your input is necessary and crucial to our collective progress. GCSSD will be offering COVID-19 tests at school for grades 5-12.
Testing will only be done with parent permission and in the following circumstances:
• For those who visit the nurse with COVID-like symptoms according to the Tennessee Department of Health (TDOH) School Decision Support Algorithm.
• For those who need a test to return to school early from quarantine (day 5 and after, return on day 8, if no symptoms)
• For those who require testing for school travel or athletics.
Students tested at school must have a signed parental consent for permission to test.
The tests done at school only test for COVID-19 and do not exclude other illnesses, so a health care providers evaluation will be needed for symptomatic students. Tests are not 100% accurate and false negatives and positives can occur. Symptomatic students will be given a rapid test first and if negative a 30-minute PCR.

As of Wednesday, August 18, 2021, SGCES, SGCMS, and SGCHS will move to Level 3 COVID operating for a duration of two weeks. This change is due to the increase in COVID cases and school transmission of the virus. Daily operation of the school will have minimal change for parents and students. The primary focus of Level 3 is social distancing (spread students out to limit contact) and also increasing cleaning procedures within the classroom and school. Our goal is to move back to Level 4 operating after 2 weeks.
To achieve this, we need your help. The state of Tennessee government and health officials recommend the following to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
1. Wear masks when indoors.
2. Wash your hands frequently.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
4. Stay home when symptomatic and get tested.
5. Follow the TN Department of Health guidelines on quarantining.
6. Get vaccinated if possible.
