The 8th grade students at SGCMS all participated in the “Pathways2Possibilities” Career Expo in Brownsville, TN. Students were able to travel through the 16 career clusters and learn about possible careers within specific professional fields. Students were able to learn about specific expected salary ranges and the education/training required to obtain these positions. Some of the businesses that were present at the event were TN Wildlife Resource Agency, TCAT Jackson, UT Martin, TVA, Hitachi Energy, Leader’s Credit Union, University of TN Health Science Center, Blue Oval SK, Fed Ex Express, and many more.

Students in SGCMS Career Awareness classes were visited by retired U.S. Navy pilots, Justin Allen and Tracy Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Allen are both retired from careers in United States Navy as Commanders. The students learned about piloting jets and helicopters and the benefits of serving in the U.S. Military. Mr. and Mrs. Allen are the parents of SGCMS students, Gage and Porter.

The Beta Club participated in a leadership summit this last week and came home with 4 more awards. Students won a general leadership award. A Project Proposal award was won by Allison Droke, Carly Coble, Madelyn Dabbs, Jaci Walters, and Brynlee Blankenship. The Collaboration Connection award was won by Benjamin Clouser, Elliot Vaughan, Jaci Walters, Harlan Mollett, and Colton Simmons. The Lead Outside the Box award was won by Rylee Hood, Lily Pastorious, Benjamin Clouser, and Elliott Vaughan. Some of the qualified Beta students will be attending the National Convention in Savannah, GA this summer. We are so proud of the beta club this year and all of their accomplishments!

Cheer tryouts will be on March 22nd for next school year. There will be a Cheer clinic on March 19th, 20th, and 21st. Tryouts are open for 5th-7th grade students. Students must have a current physical at the school. Students are highly encouraged to attend the clinic prior to tryouts.

As a part of their Career Awareness class, 8th grade students from SGCMS, visited TCAT Jackson to learn about post-secondary career options utilizing the TN Promise scholarship. Students toured the following career paths: Automotive Technology, Collision Repair, CAD Design, Computer Information Technology, Electrician Apprenticeship, HVAC/R, Industrial Maintenance, Practical Nursing, Truck Driving, and Welding.

Students in Career Advising at SGCMS were visited by Ms. Stephanie Mitchell with West Tennessee Healthcare. Ms. Mitchell is a Radiology Clinical Preceptor/Educational Coordinator and she spoke to students about careers in Radiology, Ultrasound, CT/MRI, and Nuclear Medicine. Ms. Mitchell spoke about the program at Jackson State Community College in Radiologic Technology and then other career path options in this field.
